The son of John (1902–1988) and Elizabeth Nina "Bessie" Gabelich, née Rerecich (1910–2006), Raymond Thomas Gabelich was born in Perth on 3 July 1933. He married Glenda Beverley Huxtable on 5 September 1960; they had three children: Lisa, Raymond and Matthew.
